My GCash/Maya account was frozen or restricted โ€” what are my rights?

Last updated: 2026-07-11 ยท Educational content; not legal advice.

Short answer

An e-wallet can place a temporary hold on an account it is investigating for fraud, a dispute, or anti-money-laundering reasons, but it must handle your concern fairly and tell you what is happening. Under RA 11765 (2022) you have the right to fair and equitable treatment and to timely handling and redress, so you are entitled to ask the provider, in writing, why the account was frozen and what you must do to lift it. The provider cannot simply keep your money indefinitely without process; a longer freeze generally requires a lawful basis such as an anti-money-laundering hold or a court/AMLC order. If the provider will not explain or release funds you are entitled to, escalate to the BSP.

Frequently asked

Can GCash or Maya freeze my account without telling me why?

It can place a hold while investigating, but RA 11765 gives you the right to fair treatment and to timely handling and redress. Ask, in writing, for the reason and the steps to lift the hold. A provider that stonewalls you is not meeting its consumer-protection duties.

What usually causes a freeze?

A suspected-fraud or dispute investigation, a mismatch during identity verification (KYC), or an anti-money-laundering flag. Some of these require you to submit ID or documents; ask exactly what is needed so you can clear it quickly.

Can they keep my money permanently?

No. A prolonged hold on your funds generally needs a lawful basis โ€” for example, an anti-money-laundering hold or a freeze order from a court or the AMLC under RA 9160. Absent that, demand release of funds you are entitled to and escalate to the BSP if refused.
