I sent GCash to the wrong number โ€” how do I get my money back?

Short answer

To recover a wrong or unauthorized GCash/Maya transfer: (1) report it in the app immediately and in writing so the provider can try to hold the funds before they are withdrawn; (2) if you sent it to the wrong number, demand that the recipient return it โ€” money received by mistake must be returned under the Civil Code's rule on solutio indebiti (Article 2154); (3) if the provider does not resolve your dispute, escalate to its Financial Consumer Protection Assistance Mechanism and then to the BSP Consumer Assistance Mechanism (BSP Online Buddy or consumeraffairs@bsp.gov.ph) under RA 11765 and BSP Circular 1169; (4) if the amount is โ‚ฑ1,000,000 or below and the recipient keeps the money, sue in small claims without a lawyer. LabanPH generates, for free, the refund-demand letter you send to the provider and to the recipient.

Frequently asked

How do I report a wrong transfer to GCash or Maya?

Use the in-app Help / dispute channel and file in writing so there is a timestamped record. Capture the transaction reference number, the exact amount, the date and time, the number you sent to, and a screenshot. Report immediately โ€” if the money is still in the recipient's wallet, the provider may be able to hold it.

Can the provider force the wrong recipient to give it back?

Generally no. The provider can attempt to freeze funds still in the recipient's wallet, but it cannot debit an uninvolved recipient without their consent or a court/BSP order. If the money was already withdrawn, you pursue the recipient directly under solutio indebiti (Civil Code Article 2154).

Who do I complain to if GCash won't help โ€” SEC or BSP?

The BSP. GCash (G-Xchange, Inc.) and Maya are electronic money issuers supervised by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Complain first to the provider's FCPAM under RA 11765, then escalate to the BSP Consumer Assistance Mechanism via BSP Online Buddy or consumeraffairs@bsp.gov.ph. The SEC handles lending and financing companies, not e-wallets.

Can I take the recipient to small claims?

Yes. A money claim of โ‚ฑ1,000,000 or below can be filed as a small-claims case under A.M. No. 08-8-7-SC, with no lawyer required. Your cause of action is the recipient's obligation to return money received by mistake (Civil Code Article 2154).
