My GCash/Maya went dormant โ can they charge me or take my balance?

Short answer
An unused wallet may be tagged 'dormant', but your balance is still your money. Under RA 11765 (2022) and BSP consumer-protection rules, any dormancy or maintenance fee must have been disclosed to you in advance and cannot simply appear without notice โ you have the right to clear pricing and fair treatment. A provider cannot quietly zero out your balance because the account sat idle; long-unclaimed funds are handled under the law on unclaimed balances, not pocketed by the company. If your wallet was frozen for inactivity or hit with an undisclosed dormancy charge, ask in writing for the basis and to reactivate and withdraw your funds, and escalate to the BSP under Circular 1169 if it refuses.

Frequently asked
Can they charge a dormancy fee?
Only if it was disclosed in advance in the terms and pricing you agreed to. An undisclosed fee that appears after the account goes idle is what you can dispute under RA 11765.
Will I lose my balance if the wallet stays dormant?
The provider cannot lawfully seize idle funds as its own. Reactivate and withdraw; genuinely unclaimed money is dealt with under unclaimed-balances law, not kept by the company.
How do I reactivate?
Follow the provider's reactivation or re-verification steps (usually confirming your identity). Ask in writing for the exact requirements and for release of your balance.
