I was scammed into sending money on GCash/Maya — can it be reversed?

Last updated: 2026-07-11 · Educational content; not legal advice.

Short answer

Be realistic: a transfer you authorized yourself — even one a scammer tricked you into — is not automatically reversible, because from the provider's system it was a payment you approved. Your best chance is speed: report it to GCash/Maya in writing immediately so they can try to freeze the funds before the scammer withdraws them, and report to the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group. Keeping money obtained by deceit can be estafa under Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code, so a criminal complaint against the scammer is a real avenue. If the amount is ₱1,000,000 or below you can also sue in small claims, but recovery depends on identifying the recipient — which is why you file the police report and demand the provider's assistance under RA 11765.

Frequently asked

Why isn't a scam payment auto-refunded like a wrong transfer?

Because you authorized the send. A wrong transfer is a mistake in the number; a scam is a payment you intended to make after being deceived. The provider can attempt to freeze funds still in the recipient's wallet, but it cannot simply claw back an authorized payment without the recipient's consent or an order.

What should I do in the first hour?

Report to GCash/Maya in writing with the reference number so they can try to hold the funds, change your passwords/PIN, and file a report with the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group. Save all screenshots, chat logs, and the scammer's number and account details.

Can I hold the scammer criminally liable?

Yes. Obtaining money by deceit is estafa under Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code, and online schemes can fall under RA 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act). A criminal complaint, plus a small-claims or civil case if the amount is ₱1,000,000 or below, are your recovery routes once the recipient is identified.
