GCash/Maya charged me twice for one transaction โ€” how do I get the duplicate back?

Short answer

A duplicate charge is money the provider is not entitled to keep, so you are owed the extra amount back. Report it in writing through the in-app dispute channel with the two transaction reference numbers, the amount, and the date/time so the provider can match and reverse the duplicate. RA 11765 (2022) gives you the right to timely handling and redress, and the provider must investigate and act on your dispute within the turnaround it publishes in its consumer-assistance mechanism. If it does not correct a clear double charge, escalate to the BSP Consumer Assistance Mechanism under Circular 1169.

Frequently asked

What information do I need to dispute a double charge?

Both transaction reference numbers, the exact amount, the date and time, and a screenshot of the transaction history showing the two identical debits. File in the in-app dispute channel in writing so there is a timestamped record.

Is the provider obliged to reverse it?

Money taken twice for one transaction is not owed to the provider, so the duplicate must be returned โ€” it is money received without a right to keep it (Civil Code Article 2154). RA 11765 requires the provider to handle your dispute and give you redress.

What if the provider says both charges were valid?

Ask for the transaction records behind each charge. If it cannot show two separate goods/services, the second debit is a duplicate. Escalate to the BSP Consumer Assistance Mechanism under Circular 1169 if it refuses to correct a clear duplicate.
