What leave benefits do solo parents get?

Short answer

Under RA 8972 (Solo Parents' Welfare Act) as amended by RA 11861 (Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2022), a qualified solo parent who has rendered at least one (1) year of service is entitled to seven (7) working days of parental leave with pay per year, in addition to other leaves. You establish eligibility by securing a Solo Parent Identification Card from your city/municipal social welfare office (DSWD/LGU). The parental leave is non-cumulative if unused (it does not carry over) and cannot be reduced by the employer.

Who counts as a solo parent?

RA 11861 broadened the definition to include, among others, a parent who is solely providing parental care and support due to the spouse's death, detention, incapacity, or abandonment, an unmarried parent, a legal guardian, and others recognized by the law and its rules. The DSWD/LGU issues the Solo Parent ID confirming eligibility.

How do I get the 7-day parental leave?

Present your Solo Parent Identification Card and meet the one-year service requirement, then apply for the leave with your employer. It is a paid benefit of seven working days per year; if unused within the year it does not carry over.

Are there other benefits besides leave?
