Can I pawn a cellphone, laptop, or appliance instead of jewelry — and how is it appraised?

Short answer

The law lets you pledge any personal property actually delivered to the pawnshop's control (PD 114 §3), so gadgets and appliances are eligible in principle — but whether a given branch accepts them is its own policy, and many take only jewelry, gold, and watches. If a branch does accept your item, the loan is a percentage of its appraised value, and PD 114 §9 sets a floor: the loan may not be less than 30% of the appraised value. The appraisal — based on model, condition, and resale — is the pawnshop's judgment, and both the appraised value and the loan must be written on your pawn ticket (§12). Get the appraised value, interest, and charges in writing (RA 3765) and compare branches before you pledge.

Frequently asked

Can I legally pawn non-jewelry items?

PD 114 §3 allows pledging any personal property delivered to the pawnshop's control, so phones and appliances are eligible in principle. But acceptance is a branch policy — many pawnshops only take jewelry, gold, and watches, so call ahead.

How much can I borrow against my item?

The loan is a portion of the appraised value, and PD 114 §9 requires it to be no less than 30% of that appraised value. The appraisal itself is the pawnshop's judgment based on condition and resale value.

Should the appraisal be written down?

Yes — the appraised value and the loan must appear on your pawn ticket (PD 114 §12), and the interest and charges must be disclosed in writing (RA 3765). Get everything on paper before you agree.
