Is there a monthly pension for senior citizens, and how do I qualify (social pension)?

Last updated: 2026-07-12 · Educational content; not legal advice.

Short answer

Yes — indigent senior citizens receive a monthly social pension from the government, separate from any SSS or GSIS pension. RA 11916 (2022) increased it to not less than ₱1,000 per month (up from ₱500). To qualify you must be at least 60, have no pension from SSS/GSIS/other agencies, and have no permanent source of income or regular support from family — you are enrolled through the DSWD's targeting system. Apply at your local OSCA or city/municipal social welfare office; confirm the current amount and enrollment status with DSWD, since release is subject to the annual budget.

Frequently asked

How much is the senior citizen social pension now?

RA 11916, signed in 2022, set the social pension for indigent senior citizens at not less than ₱1,000 per month, doubling the previous ₱500. Because payout depends on the yearly appropriation, confirm the current amount and your enrollment with DSWD or your local OSCA.

Who counts as an 'indigent' senior for the pension?

Broadly, a senior at least 60 years old who has no pension from SSS, GSIS, or any other government agency, and no permanent source of income or regular financial support. DSWD assesses eligibility through its targeting system — being poor is the core requirement.

Is this the same as my SSS or GSIS pension?

No. The social pension is a separate government subsidy for indigent seniors. If you already receive an SSS or GSIS pension you generally do not qualify for the social pension.
